A DIY Arduino watch that’s actually wearable, still won’t win you points with the ladies

Arduino LED Watch

Here’s a little fashion secret: it’s all about the details. Wear cheap square-toe shoes with that $5,000 custom-made suit and people will notice. The same is true of a watch. Your timepiece can say a lot about you, including: “I’m a big nerd, please beat me up and take my lunch money.” So, what does an Arduino watch tell your peers? Well, for one, that you have way too much time on your hands. And two, that you’re crafty person capable of putting their brain meats to work building actual things. Of course, telling time with a series of brightly glowing LEDs on an exposed PCB also sends the message that being fashionable is not your primary concern. If you’re looking to earn some geek cred, and can live with the fact that wearing this will probably cost you that cute girl’s number at the bar, hit up the source for instructions. At least this wearable Arduino timepiece is a slightly less conspicuous than the Steampunk version we saw last summer. One more pic after the break. Read more »

Hitachi’s 4.5-inch IPS HD display delivers 329ppi on the cheap courtesy of amorphous silicon backplane

Written by Admin on September 27, 2011 – 10:30 pm -

It’s been awhile, but earlier this year Hitachi unveiled a beautiful new 4.5-inch IPS LCD sporting 1280 x 720 resolution, a 1,100:1 contrast ratio and a retina display-like 329ppi. Well, in the time since, Hitachi’s been hard at work on a virtually identical version of that screen that uses amorphous silicon instead of low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) as its backplane material. What’s the difference? Well, amorphous silicon’s much cheaper to produce than LTPS, and the company figured out a way to use it in its new panel with only a scant drop in performance — the new one’s got a lower 1,000:1 contrast ratio, but all the other specs are the same. So, the screen’s a comparative bargain while still providing 4.5 inches of 500-nit HD goodness. Thanks, Hitachi, we always did like eating our cake and having it too.

Scientists prove that active exploration isn’t required to create memories, +1 for 2D learning

Written by Admin on September 27, 2011 – 3:30 am -

In a small victory for gamers and TV junkies everywhere, scientists found that viewing 2D images helped create long-term memories, meaning that visual media can help your learn. To form lasting memories, nerve cells normally experience “long-term potentiation” and “long-term depression” — both essential for learning. Researchers found that long-term depression was achieved when they let rats actively wander around a new environment. When they replaced the explorable area with a computer screen, the same memory-making phenomenon still occurred. The study’s conclusion? Video games and TV shows can help us learn, similarly to traditional non-electronic methods. Of course, there are concerns that visual media overload could lead to shorter attention spans, interfere with lessons taught at school and… oh look! A cat! Survey finds BlackBerry developers still profitable, Android Market as the store to watch

Written by Admin on September 26, 2011 – 1:30 pm -

Although the BlackBerry app store may be missing a favorite app or ten, according to a report from Evans Data Corp., developers are still making money by creating apps for the OS. Although the survey feels a bit narrow in scope (just 400 working developers were polled), 13 percent of ‘Berry devs said they make $100,000 or more per app — which according to the data collectors — is “considerably more than Android or iOS developers.” So why isn’t everyone dropping what they’re doing to develop for RIM’s OS? The problems seemed to outweigh the allure of cold, hard cash. 37 percent said app visibility was the biggest issue with the store, while others griped about the approval process and heavy restrictions. Developers were equally unenthusiastic about BlackBerry’s future, as only 4.8 percent predicted it would have the top market share two years from now — 30.2 percent went with Android and 28.4 percent voted Apple’s App Store. Check out the full report at the source.

How would you change HTC’s Droid Incredible 2?

Written by Admin on September 25, 2011 – 10:30 pm -

It’s borderline crazy to think that we posed this very question about the original Droid Incredible in June of 2010, yet here we are again. Same question, different day, and (mostly) different phone. Verizon Wireless has been pumping out Android devices like it’s its job — and really, it sort of is — and HTC’s DI2 is certainly one of the more polarizing options. Loaded with Sense and plenty of VZW “extras,” we’re anxious to see if the things that bothered us also bothered you. Is the screen size adequate? Are you still better off with Sense than without? Would you change the form factor or software in any way for the inevitable third iteration? Holler in comments below — we’re all ears. Read more »

Verizon goes to bat for Samsung in patent war with Apple

Written by Admin on September 24, 2011 – 1:30 pm -

Samsung vs. Apple

Well, it was really only a matter of time before third parties stuck their nose in the ongoing battle between Apple and Samsung. For most of this time others have stood on the sidelines, occasionally shouting moral support. But, no one has rolled up their sleeves and put up their dukes for either party — that is, until now. Verizon has requested permission to file a brief with the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, asking it to deny Apple’s request for a nation-wide injunction against the Infuse 4G, Galaxy S 4G, Droid Charge and Galaxy Tab 10.1. At the heart of Verizon’s argument is that a ban on import of Samsung’s devices would harm not only the carrier’s business, but consumers and the economy by slowing the growth of its LTE network. The brief, technically, only relates to one of the four infringement claims filed by Apple, but it’s clear that Verizon has just as much interest in seeing Samsung succeed in the other three challenges as well. For more (somewhat editorialized) details, hit up the source link. Read more »

Sony offers ‘adjustment’ for NEX-5N camera to reduce clicking sound while recording video

Written by Admin on September 23, 2011 – 10:30 pm -

Looks like we weren’t the only one afflicted by the Sony NEX-5N camera’s annoying click problem. In case you missed it, the camera displayed the annoying tendency of producing an audible click loud enough to ruin any 1080/60p video if it was moved suddenly while shooting. Tonight Sony updated its support site to promise a “performance improvement” available to all owners under the camera’s warranty that it claims reduces the sound. At the moment we don’t have any more information on what’s causing the sound or what the improvement entails, but owners can dial 888-868-7392 to get their units upgraded. Read more »

Amtrak to finally launch free WiFi on October 1st?

Written by Admin on September 23, 2011 – 3:30 am -

Rumor ’round the Twitterverse has it that Amtrak may finally be implementing free WiFi on October 1st — finally seeing the bet laid down by various plane and bus companies over the past couple years. The casual conversation between conductor and passenger yielded the information that the system is apparently “ready to roll and it’s [sic] just a matter of ‘flipping the on switch.’” This comes as great news for commuters who have heard rumblings of the allegedly forthcoming free WiFi since January of 2010. Unfortunately, other than the tweet, there’s no word (official or otherwise) whether net surfage will be possible beginning next month. Regardless, looks like the “I didn’t have internet access” excuse is still valid for a little while longer for all you nine to fivers.
