Written by Admin on September 30, 2010 – 10:30 pm -

T-Mobile’s official street date for the G2 is Wednesday next week, but we knew some pre-orderers would be getting the phone early, and it looks like we’ve already got an unboxing to show for it. Rugged, free-spirited tipster Silverwolfe did the honors, and even managed to size the phone up against the original G2 while he was at it. Check out a few shots below, or hit up the source link for the full gallery. Read more »

Razer Tron Mouse leaves light trails in our hearts (video)

Written by Admin on September 29, 2010 – 10:30 pm -

We don’t really expect that the actual Tron movie will be any good, but boy, its officially endorsed accessories aren’t looking half bad. The $100 laser mouse from Razer has snuck out for a quick pre-release video demo where we get to see it tracking gloriously on an accompanying “precision” mousepad. There’s hardly much to be learnt about the mouse’s ergonomics or 5600dpi accuracy, but it does glow with that mighty inviting shade of blue (cyan?) and the mousepad reacts to the laser’s illumination by leaving dreamy light trails after your movements. It’s cyber-poetry in motion, available after the break. Read more »

Sony A55/A33 video recording limited by overheating sensor

Written by Admin on September 29, 2010 – 3:30 am -

So this is why the promo video accompanying Sony’s launch of the A55 and A33 was set against a snowy backdrop. It turns out that these oh-so-revolutionary translucent mirror shooters can’t keep their cool for any longer than 11 minutes when recording video at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius with Image Stabilization turned on. The A55 is even quicker to overheat at 9 minutes, though it’s worth noting that with IS switched off you can obtain the maximum of nearly half an hour of footage — provided the weather doesn’t heat up. Sony blames this on the APS-C-sized sensor within, and it’ true that plenty of DSLRs come with artificial time limits — our D5000 won’t let us get past five minutes however we try to sweet-talk it — but it’s an irksome limitation to consider if you’re thinking of buying either of these Alphas for their otherwise awesome video capabilities. Sony Ericsson LiveView acts as a 1.3-inch remote control for your smartphone, requires Android 2.0

Written by Admin on September 28, 2010 – 3:30 am -

You’ve been asking for someone, anyone, to please kick out a tiny remote control display that can save you from having to whip your smartphone out for every little thing and Sony Ericsson, it seems, has listened. The 1.3-inch OLED screen above is a new Bluetooth accessory for Android 2.x phones that’s said to function very much like a desktop widget. There’s an app you can install on your phone that’ll get it to communicate with the 128 x 128 pixel grid, which can then be used to read messages, find your phone, control music playback, and receive those precious social networking updates from your friends. We know by now you’ll be crying foul over Sony Ericsson dishing out an Android 2.0 accessory when its phones are stuck somewhere below that marker, but the plan is to dish this “micro display” out in the last quarter of the year, after that messianic Android 2.1 update has arrived. Fingers crossed. Read more »

Sony’s boom beverage speaker now available as American cup holder surrogate

Written by Admin on September 26, 2010 – 10:30 pm -

Were you jealous of Japanese commuters getting to ignore their car’s multichannel audio system in favor of a bright, 16-watt thermos of beats in their cup holder? Then today’s your lucky day, because Audiocubes.com has brought Sony Japan’s SRS-V500IP — which is the iPod friendly version of the RDP-NWV500 sound mug — state-side. Like the NWV500, it’s also available in colors of black, orange, and happiness-inspiring pink, and packs the same Circle Sound Stage speaker system for a full 360 degrees of tuneage. If you don’t own an iPod, a 3.5mm audio jack is thrown in to connect other devices like Sony’s S740 Walkmen — double the imported Japanese audio gear, double the Cool Person Points, right? Currently priced at $240, its U.S. availability still doesn’t really clarify its practicality. Especially when you consider that your new shiny iPod Nano’s color scheme won’t even match! Avaya intros business-oriented A175 tablet, shows off Flare user interface

Written by Admin on September 26, 2010 – 3:30 am -

Avaya’s not a name you generally hear when circling the consumer electronics water cooler, and even though it just introduced a new tablet, you still won’t ever see this guy in Target, Best Buy or Walmart. Expected to cost between $1,500 and $2,000, this 11.5-inch enterprise tablet is designed primarily to be used at a cubicle, doubling as a SIP phone and tripling as an office collaboration tool. Dubbed a “Polycom killer” more than an iPad killer, this unit relies on Aura 6.0 and the newly designed Flare user interface (detailed in the video past the break), which enables touchscreen operation and supports multi-user video calling, email, web browsing and support for Android applications. Specs wise, it’s “slightly thicker than an iPad,” has a trio of USB 2.0 ports, inbuilt WiFi, 3G / 4G WWAN support and an integrated battery for those days when you simply have to clock in from the comfort of Venice Beach. Hit that More Coverage link for a live report at the device’s unveiling, and feel free to start hassling your manager to order up a few dozen of these. Or use that money for office-wide raises — whatever floats your boat.
