Sharp’s e-reader ready to ‘rival the iPad’ by year’s end, may have a 3D future
Written by Admin on August 25, 2010 – 3:30 am -Sharp is going to launch its brand new e-reader in Japan this fall with US retail availability to follow by the end of the year. Riveting stuff, isn’t it? Well, the company’s President Mikio Katayama does his best to spice things up by proposing this device will aim “to rival the iPad,” and it may well sport a color LCD if earlier indications still hold true, but what’s really got us hot under the collar is the potential for 3D down the line. Katayama claims to have witnessed great enthusiasm for 3D — particularly when it comes to games — and posits it as a likely future direction for this new ebook reader. Multifunctional devices are what people want, he says, and since Sharp already has a 3D smartphone in the pipeline and a glasses-free 3D tablet display in the lab, we can’t see many technical hurdles to the realization of his vision. Let’s just hope his depth perception is accurate when it comes to measuring the interest in three-dee. Read more »

Microsoft details Vejle, the new Xbox 360’s system-on-chip architecture
Written by Admin on August 24, 2010 – 3:30 am -There aren’t many unresolved mysteries with Microsoft’s new console by this point — apart from perhaps why it wasn’t named the Stealthbox, like we were suggesting — but one thing that hasn’t been covered in excruciating detail yet is the new 360’s splicing of the CPU and GPU into the same chip. Microsoft has remedied that today, informing us that the 45nm system-on-chip (codenamed Vejle; sorry, Valhalla fans) inside the refreshed Xbox makes do with a relatively minimal 372 million transistors, requiring only 40 percent of the power and less than 50 percent of the die space of its 2005 ancestor. A somewhat bemusing addition, noted by Ars, is the FSB Replacement sector you see in the image above. It’s designed to induce lag in the system so that the Vejle chip doesn’t run faster than the old stuff, something Microsoft couldn’t allow to happen. Facepalm away, good people, facepalm away. Virgin Mobile USA fortells unlimited prepaid mobile broadband for $40 a month
Written by Admin on August 21, 2010 – 10:30 pm -Whereas AT&T’s move to tiered smartphone data pricing signaled “the end of unlimited” to some, Sprint subsidiary Virgin Mobile USA has just defied that notion with an all-you-can-eat broadband buffet priced at $40 per month. First reported by IntoMobile and confirmed today on the carrier’s Facebook page, the plan will replace existing $20, $40 and $60 monthly offerings that currently top out at just 5GB, so only those accustomed to paying $20 a month (for 300MB) won’t get a totally sweet deal. As you can see above, the $10 for 100MB over 10 days plan will still stay pat, so you can still choose whether to sip or gulp down Sprint network packets when the plans purportedly go into effect on August 24th. Eking E5 UMPC brings tilting, sliding 5-inch display
Written by Admin on August 21, 2010 – 3:30 am -It’s been awhile, eh Eking? The elusive handheld maker is storming back onto the scene today with an all new UMPC, despite that fact that UMPCs have been largely left behind and covered up by this new “tablet craze.” All that aside, the E5 is definitely one of the more delightful units that we’ve seen, and we can’t help think of HTC’s Advantage when it’s opened up as shown above. Specs wise, this guy is boasting a 5-inch WSVGA (1,024 x 600) Sharp-sourced display that tilts and slides back, and an Intel Atom Z515 (1.2GHz) is powering things under the hood. There’a also 1GB of DDR2 memory, a 16GB SSD, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, inbuilt 3G connectivity, a GPS module, 3 megapixel camera and a 2,600mAh battery that lasts for an undisclosed amount of time. Eking’s also going the generous route and tossing in a load of accessories, but given the nearly $800 price tag for those who choose to import, we can understand why. Hit the links below for a few more looks, but don’t expect it to ship outside of China anytime soon. Read more »

Pico projector camera concept is, as usual, better than the real thing
Written by Admin on August 20, 2010 – 8:30 am -Oh, don’t get us wrong, we rather enjoyed our time with Nikon’s S1100pj projector camera, but this here Pico concept design is on a whole other level. We’re talking both in terms of cuteness and inventiveness. You might have recognized by now that one of the Pico’s “eyes” is the camera lens while the other is the projector, but what of the “smile?” Why, that’s your microphone’s sound intake port. And its little feet — acting as a stabilizing stand when in projector mode — also double up as covers for the external connection jacks. Masterful. Look for it to appear in your dreams some time very soon. Read more »
