SD cards branded with an upper-case ‘I’ are faster, yo
Written by Admin on June 24, 2010 – 3:30 am -Since they’re theoretically capable of 300 megabyte per second transfer rates, we knew SDXC cards wouldn’t stay slow forever. How will we separate wheat from chaff when faster models do appear, though? You’re looking at it. This week, the SD Association unveiled the UHS-I specification for SDXC and SDHC cards capable of transferring data at up to 104 megabytes per second — reportedly fast enough to record HD videos in real time. Why the association chose the phrasing “up to” is a little iffy, as we thought the point of such specifications was quality control, but considering how many Class 4 and Class 6 SD cards we’ve tossed that didn’t match up to spec, we suppose we’ll make do with a ballpark estimate… until the inevitable UHS-II makes the rounds. PR after the break. Read more »

Apple: white iPhone 4 not available until second half of July, ‘more challenging to manufacture than expected’
Written by Admin on June 23, 2010 – 1:30 pm -Well, it looks like you can put those conspiracy theories to rest… or can you? Apple has just put out an official statement on the nowhere to be found white iPhone 4, which it now says will not be available until the “second half of July.” What’s the holdup? Apparently, the white models have “proven more challenging to manufacture than expected” — but don’t worry, Apple assures us that “availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.” Complete statement (which you’ve mostly just read) is as follows: Read more »

Eigenharp Alpha’s biggest fan pens 11,000 word guide
Written by Admin on June 22, 2010 – 10:30 pm -Earlier this month, lucky musician Geert unboxed an Eigenharp Alpha for the whole world to see. Now he’s jotted down a few thoughts on the 132-key digital instrument… oh hell, let’s just call it a primer. Calling out years of musical study as proof he knows what he’s talking about, the man delves into enough detail about the mind-blowing multi-instrument machine to teach Eigenharp 101. If you want to know whether dropping £3,995 on the musical creature would be worth your while, you’ll find all you need to know at the source link, but be aware the sheer complexity here may serve to daunt some would-be casual learners. If you need to regain your enthusiasm afterwards though, there’s no quicker way than watching an Eigenharp jam session — we recorded one at the company’s London HQ, and you’ll find it after the break. Google setting up music store later this year, looking for search and Android synergy
Written by Admin on June 22, 2010 – 8:30 am -Remember that chart that pointed out the differences between Google, Apple and Microsoft? Well, it’s looking increasingly like Google is intent on filling any and all gaps in its portfolio. Those good old unnamed sources have been talking, originally to CNET last week and to the Wall Street Journal today, and disclosing Google’s supposed intent to introduce its very own music store. This would initially encompass a web store where you can stream or download tracks, with a search tie-in that’ll get your money into Google’s pocket in the fastest possible way. Subsequent plans are said to include Android integration in 2011 — something that Google rather nonchalantly demoed at its I/O conference last month. Of course, none of this is as yet confirmed, but it looks like Apple and Google will be competing across yet another front — hold on tight. Read more »

DMP’s Pica200 GPU is the power behind Nintendo 3DS (video)
Written by Admin on June 20, 2010 – 10:30 pm -We’d never heard of Digital Media Professionals until this very moment, but we’d guess the company won’t have that problem in future — according to a press release fresh off the Japanese wire, its Pica200 GPU is the one pushing pixels to Nintendo’s autostereoscopic screen. While we don’t know exactly how the tiny graphics unit works or what CPU it might be paired with in a system-on-a-chip, the company claims it supports per-pixel lighting, procedural textures and antialiasing among a host of other effects, and generates 15.3 million polygons per second at its native 200MHz. What is impressive is the video after the break — reportedly rendered entirely on the chip — and of course, the 3DS itself, but you’ll have to take our word on that. Read more »

HTC promises fix for Droid Incredible’s ne’er-to-forget browser
Written by Admin on June 19, 2010 – 3:30 am -In case you missed the recent excitement, a “feature” of HTC’s Droid Incredible was found whereby the Sense UI bookmarking widget would take random screenshots of your web browsing experience and put them in a folder that’s nigh impossible to delete, even after resetting to factory settings. Looks like the company knows about the issue, acknowledging it in a statement and promising a fix “in the near future.” It also suggests a different reset to fix the mess, which apparently is to select “Format Phone Storage” from the “SD Card and Phone Storage” settings menu. Let us know if you have any luck with this and please, be careful about your browsing habits if you’re worried what might be hanging around. Read more »
