MIT researchers develop the most fabulous gesture control technique yet

Written by Admin on May 23, 2010 – 10:30 pm -

When looking for a cheap, reliable way to track gestures, Robert Wang and Jovan Popovic of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory came upon this notion: why not paint the operator’s hands (or better yet, his Lycra gloves) in a manner that will allow the computer to differentiate between different parts of the hand, and differentiate between the hand and the background? Starting with something that Howie Mandel might have worn in the 80s, the researchers are able to use a simple webcam to track the hands’ locations and gestures — with relatively little lag. The glove itself is split into twenty patches made up of ten different colors, and while there’s no telling when this technology will be available for consumers, something tells us that when it does become available it’ll be very hard not to notice. Video after the break.

Mercedes-Benz Hexawheel concept is the 4×4 you never knew you needed

Written by Admin on May 23, 2010 – 3:30 am -

It ain’t the first Mercedes-Benz concept to dazzle us, and we get the feeling it’s far from being the last. Dreamed up by designer Siyamak Rouhi Dehkordi, the Hexawheel is doing its darnedest to bring the gas guzzler back, and while we’d never turn down a solid deal on our own G-Wagon, there’s something mighty novel about this ride. Boasting an iconic M-B design, this here creature deviates drastically from the typical road warrior, utilizing six wheels on an articulated chassis with a flexible drivetrain. All told, it’d measure some 16 feet if ushered into production, and it’s quite possibly the best beach vehicle next to the dune buggy. There’s no word on what kind of powerplant this thing would support, but we’re guessing something involving fuel cells would be appropriate. Give those links below a visit if you’re in the mood for more images. Read more »

Written by Admin on May 21, 2010 – 1:30 pm -

Since its initial launch on the T-Mobile G1 in October of 2008, Google’s Android operating system has evolved rapidly — perhaps more rapidly than any other operating system in recent memory — to become one of the most important and prolific smartphone platforms in the market today. Its latest incarnation, announced at Google’s I/O conference in San Francisco this week, began life as codename “Froyo” (continuing its tradition of naming new versions as desserts in alphabetical order, starting with Cupcake) to officially become Android 2.2. Don’t be fooled by the mere 0.1 boost in the version number over 2.1 Eclair, though — this is a huge upgrade that represents the most user-friendly, compelling, and feature-complete version of the little green guy to date.
