AT&T getting ‘practice’ Pre Pluses tomorrow?

Written by Admin on March 31, 2010 – 10:30 pm -

It looks like AT&T will start taking delivery tomorrow of Pre Plus units that are being specifically designated as high-security, SKU-less “practice devices” that are only to be used off the sales floor for training purposes, though when training is complete, they can be moved to a live store display. That certainly lends weight to a launch happening sooner rather than later, counter to rumors earlier in the month that we might not see them on shelves until the peak of Summer. Of course, we don’t know how long the training sessions are going to run — our leak here gives no indication of that, nor of a retail release date — but considering that we first saw this form factor back in January of ‘09, it’s seriously in everyone’s best interest to fast-track these. Our fingers are crossed.

AT&T building out network capacity to prevent exodus to Verizon’s iPhone?

Written by Admin on March 31, 2010 – 3:30 am -

So this is what all those “yo’ network’s so slow” jokes were about. The Wall Street Journal has today penned a story framing AT&T’s hefty recent investments in building out its network as a defensive move against a “huge exodus to Verizon” when its rival gets the iPhone. These preventative measures include working with Apple on streamlining the iPhone’s network load, and infrastructure spending that is expected to total $2 billion by the end of the year. The WSJ claimed yesterday that Apple was working on a CMDA version of its iPhone that could hit mass production as early as September. However, concluding that the iPhone on Verizon is a done deal is something of a stretch. Sprint has shown a remarkable ability to attract cutting edge phones, and China Unicom’s exclusivity agreement is about to hit its precarious first anniversary about the time this handset is set to roll out. Still, setting aside the analyst blather and extrapolation, the picture that emerges is of AT&T feverishly patching up its service offering in the face of a rapidly expiring exclusivity arrangement.

Celsius X VI II LEDIX, the $300k dumbphone, gets handled

Yes, folks, what you are looking at is perhaps the world’s most overly complex cellphone, and it has been given an overly complex name to match: the Celsius X VI II LEDIX. All those roman numerals don’t convey the sense of power you’ll feel in holding this to the side of your face while yelling at your assistant in a futile attempt at gaining the respect of your peers. Despite the phone quite naturally having a battery inside, the (soon to be broken) watch mechanism is purely mechanical, given another three hours of life each time you open and close this clamshell. Inside you can gaze at a design straight out of 1998 and functionality not much more advanced — a simple browser, text messaging, and tri-band GSM. 3G isn’t even on offer here folks, but when you’re this rich you can pay other people to download high-res lolcat pictures for you. Mobile Broadband Hints And Tips

Written by Admin on March 30, 2010 – 8:30 am -

If you need internet access when you are on the move, then you basically have two options. Wi-Fi connections are fairly fast and reliable, but their availability is limited, and it can be quite expensive to use the Wi-Fi networks available in cafes and on some trains and planes. You can use a mobile broadband connection anywhere, as long as you are within reception range, but speeds tend to be rather slow when compared to other types of internet connection. However, there are several things that you can do to ensure that you are getting the fastest possible mobile broadband speeds.

Kenwood AS-iP70 converges picture frame, alarm clock, FM radio and iPhone dock into one

Written by Admin on March 29, 2010 – 3:30 am -

We know, you’ve seen enough iDevice docks to make your eyes bleed with frustration, but if your bedside table is growing a bit cluttered with all the appendages and chargers you have lying around, you might wanna check this one out. Kenwood’s 7-inch AS-iP70 can serve as a picture viewer, a music player, an alarm clock, or an FM radio, while also packing USB and SD card inputs for alternative media sources. All in all, it looks quite slick and has plenty of buttons to play around with, but be warned that its 800 x 480 resolution is intended for pictures only, there’s no video playback to be had. If that and the ¥25,000 sticker (about $270, launching in Japan this April) have you running scared, you might want to check out Sony’s cheaper, AVI-playing alternative right over here. More pictures of Kenwood’s new hotness can be found at the source. Read more »

Victorinox Secure Pro USB drive is ‘un-hackable,’ can file your nails

Written by Admin on March 28, 2010 – 3:30 am -

This isn’t the first USB drive / Swiss army knife we’ve seen from Victorinox, but the company’s new Secure Pro drive is the first that is supposedly “un-hackable.” To put that claim to the test, Victorinox actually offered a £100,000 prize to a team of “professional hackers” if they could crack the drive during the company’s launch event — they were unable to do so. That un-hackableness apparently comes primarily from the drive’s combination of AES256 technology and fingerprint security, which is paired with (get this) a self-destruct mechanism that irrevocably burns the CPU and memory chip if there’s any attempt to force the drive open. All that and a pair of scissors — how can you go wrong? No word on a release over here just yet, but the drive is now available in the UK in capacities from 8GB to 32GB for between £50 and £180 (or about $75 to $270).

AT&T’s Palm Pixi Plus granted the FCC’s best wishes

Written by Admin on March 27, 2010 – 4:30 am -

Alright, kiddies, gather ’round, because it’s time for everyone’s favorite class: Palm Model Codes 101. As you might recall from Sunnyvale’s previous exploits in the FCC’s system, P101 devices are Pres, while P121s are Pixis. That part of the code is followed by a three-character string indicating the radio type: EWW for CDMA, UEU for European GSM, and UNA for North American GSM. Using everything we know there, we can safely deduce that the P121UNA that just crossed the wires is the AT&T-branded version of the Pixi Plus, a device that we know to be hitting shelves “in the coming months.” Whether FCC certification was one of the roadblocks in getting it launched is a mystery, but it certainly can’t hurt the process, can it?
