HTC Legend’s battery compartment ready to blow minds

Written by Admin on February 22, 2010 – 11:30 pm -

We touched on the Legend’s innards during our video demo of the phone at MWC last week, but at the time, we didn’t see what was actually under the plastic flap. The answer? A most unusual battery compartment, that’s what. HTC’s unibody follow-on to last year’s Hero throws away the concept of a battery cover altogether, opting instead for an endcap that conceals slots for the SIM and microSD card along with the battery — in other words, it slot-loads rather than dropping into place like almost every other phone you’ve used. Besides eliminating a big, ugly battery cover, the setup means that all three components can be changed independently; gone are the days of yanking the battery just to swap SIMs, for instance. It’s not a totally unprecedented configuration (the Devour takes a similar path, for one), but with HTC’s weight being thrown behind these slick designs now, we’re excited to see where it could lead — assuming signal strength still rules with that much aluminum in play. Liquavista demos its color e-paper display with a new QWERTY-equipped dev kit (video)

Written by Admin on February 22, 2010 – 4:30 am -

You’ll be forgiven for just glazing over during CES and ignoring all those ebook readers that were raining down, but Liquavista’s attempt at marrying the endurance of e-paper with the desirability of color is well worth another look. The company has now furnished its LiquavistaColor dev kit with a QWERTY keyboard and also recruited Texas Instruments into the fold, whose OMAP system-on-a-chip is doing the grunt work under the hood. The video after the break indicates that touchscreen interaction is also planned, but the most impressive thing has to be the total lack of any redrawing pauses, which may be the considered the biggest drawback to the many E Ink devices out there. For the more conventional monochromatic crowd, we’ve also grabbed video of the LiquavistaBright, which replicates the rapid refresh skills, but omits the keyboard and OMAP in favor of a more compact form factor and Freescale iMX5x hardware. Slide past the break to see it all. Read more »

Written by Admin on February 21, 2010 – 2:30 pm -

Not sure if anyone clued you in, but there’s a reasonably large camera show going on in Anaheim, and the shooter news is flowing hot and heavy. General Imaging (or GE, as it were) has just busted out its 2010 range of point and shoot cameras, and while none of ‘em are particularly mind-blowing, there are a few here worth paying attention to. The waterproof G5WP (ships in late Q2 for $179.99) is a natural successor to last year’s G3WP, offering up a metal enclosure, 4x internal zoom, a 12.2 megapixel sensor and your choice of gray, red or blue color schemes. The $149.99 X5 megazoom offers up a 15x zoom lens, a maximum ISO of 3,200 and a Q2 ship date, while the J1455 brings a 14.2 megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom lens, image stabilization and a multitude of color options for $129.99. The ‘Power Series’ is seeing two new additions today in the 0.83-inch thick E1486TW ($179.99) and E1480W ($149.99), both of which include HD movie modes, optical image stabilization, a 14 megapixel sensor, an 8x optical zoomer and a 3-inch rear LCD. The company’s low-end C- and A-series cameras are also seeing updates today, all of which are detailed in the linked presser.

GE outs PMA 2010 range: X5, E1486TW, E1480W, J1455 and waterproof G5WP originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 21 Feb 2010 13:19:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Written by Admin on February 20, 2010 – 11:30 pm -

We’ve been live viewing our photos on our fancy new-gen DSLRs for a couple years now, even piping that live sensor data into our computer with a first party app, or, gasp, shooting video our magical newfangled cameras. But we haven’t done this yet. Pixel Enterprise Limited has just announced its new LV-W1 Wireless Live View Remote Control, which beams a live DSLR view over that well-worn 2.4GHz channel to a handheld remote with a 3-inch 960 x 240 LCD. It seems like a great idea, and while the future might make even fancier dreams come true — like a live WiFi 2, The Sequel-beamed image to our Windows Phone 8 Series handset, for instance — but for now this $335 kit should provide for some pretty spectacular Canon or Nikon moments. Typing ‘cadence’ used to identify authorized database users, lock everyone else out

Written by Admin on February 20, 2010 – 4:30 am -

We’ll admit to having shared a few login credentials amongst friends here and there in our younger days, but it sounds like the party might soon be over: a company called Scout Analytics has developed a way of identifying a user’s “typing cadence,” and matching it to how a username and password are entered. It only takes 5 login attempts of around 12 characters for Scout to nab your cadence, and although 1 in 20,000 people will share the same cadence, combining the data with browser info and IP addresses makes it accurate enough for general usage. No word on what sites are using this technique, but we won’t be surprised if it starts popping up rapidly — and sniffing typing cadences becomes the next great malware scourge.

We’re in no place to comment on the difficultly of slipping $34.95, $259.95 or $449.95 (in order of mention) out of your wallet, though, which is essentially required in order to take one home. That’s the breaks, kid!
