NetTalk responds to MagicJack founder’s comments

Written by Admin on January 26, 2010 – 2:30 pm -

MagicJack founder Dan Borislow certainly didn’t mince any words in tearing apart his latest competitor in a recent interview, and it looks like those comments unsurprisingly didn’t go unnoticed by the folks at NetTalk. In an (expletive-free) official statement just released today, the company says that contrary to comments made, “our company is founded and run by a staff of seasoned executives with decades of experience who firmly attests to and stands behind the high quality of netTALK’s policies, customer service practices, network and product development activities.” It further goes on to note that the TK6000 device offers “more convenience, flexibility and functionality” than “others on the market,” and that it is, in fact, a “best-of-all-worlds communication device.” Head on past the break for the complete statement.

DIY scanner cuts out the hassle, keeps the fun of Super 8 film scanning

Written by Admin on January 25, 2010 – 11:30 pm -

Looking to speed up your Super 8 film scanning but not ready to step up to a pricey, professional rig? Then might want to take after Flickr user Photobsen, who rigged up this system that relies on an old floppy drive, a flatbed scanner, some parts from a vintage Super 8 viewer, and a good bit of know-how. Unfortunately, there’s no detailed plans for building your own, but the rig is apparently able to scan Super 8 film at a rate of 80 seconds of film per hour completely unattended — although we wouldn’t blame you if you sat and admired your handiwork for a while after piecing one of these together.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCLII: Nokia N900 commits S60 5th fraud

Written by Admin on January 25, 2010 – 4:30 am -

It’s not the first N900 KIRF we’ve seen but it’s definitely the truest fake physical reproduction of Nokia’s flagship “mobile computer” to date. Not necessarily a good thing since its the raw power and OS that makes the N900 such a compelling handset — not its looks. Nevertheless, the industrial design, port placements, and QWERTY layout of this “N900 Style” handset is a near exact physical knock-off of its Nokia inspiration. Critically absent is Maemo 5 riding an ARM Cortex A8 processor, 32GB of integrated storage, WiFi, 3G data radio, Carl Zeiss optics, and the peace of mind you get when purchasing a genuine Nokia handset. Besides, even with dual-SIM support, do you really want to spend $120 for a JAVA-built S60 5th-ish user experience on a 3.2-inch display pushing 240 x 320 pixels? Oh hell no. One more shot after the break if you’re feeling surly.

HTC HD2 gets a spec boost for the US

Written by Admin on January 24, 2010 – 2:30 pm -

Looks like the HTC HD2 is getting a little spec bump on its way to our fair shores: the official spec page lists the version bound for T-Mobile US with 1GB of ROM and 576 of RAM, a boost over the international edition’s 512 and 448MB. Not a bad little upgrade — dare we hope that it presages a much bigger bump to Windows Mobile 7 before the scheduled spring launch?

GDC attendees getting free Droid or Nexus One, perfect for Palm’s training session

Written by Admin on January 23, 2010 – 11:30 pm -

Unless you’re press or a booth worker, major industry trade shows can be educational, enlightening, relaxing… dare we say even fun events that actually don’t fill you with dread at their mere mention. Of course, the trade-off is that you (or your employer, if you’re lucky) are then responsible for fronting the hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars that organizations command for passes to those events. So what do you get in return apart from a few days of schmoozing with some of the most important people in your line of work and the opportunity to play with cool stuff and steal as many promotional pens and USB sticks as you possibly can? In the case of GDC this March, attendees who sign up for either the Mobile / Handheld Summit, the iPhone Summit, or the Independent Games Summit will be gifted with their choice of a Droid or Nexus One, representing the hottest, latest Android gear from Motorola and HTC, respectively — potentially prime targets for the yet-to-be-tapped 3D gaming market on the platform. With Palm onsite, it should make for some interesting dynamics — but then again, they’re giving these things to people at an event called the “iPhone Summit,” for crying out loud. Read more »

IBM and Fujifilm develop 35TB magnetic tape cartridges, unveil it in black and white

Written by Admin on January 23, 2010 – 4:30 am -

SSDs may be what’s “next,” but seriously — magnetic tape storage is the real heat. This darn near antediluvian storage medium is amazingly still around and kicking, and what’s even more incredible is that real advancements are taking place. Just under four years ago, IBM and Fujifilm were doing the Cha Cha Slide Tango as they introduced 8TB cartridges; today, the two are rolling out (quite literally, actually) a 35TB version into the wild, wild world that we call home. Nah, you won’t find these on any Best Buy shelves, but your great grandchild’s medical records may one day end up on something built in the year 2010. Just think about that. Think about it.

Asimo stars in Living With Robots, promises not to forget the ‘little people’ (video)

Written by Admin on January 22, 2010 – 2:30 pm -

When we saw Asimo do his Fred Astaire act a while back we knew he had star quality — and now it looks like the feisty robot is finally getting his big break. Living With Robots, which just premiered at Sundance Film Festival, was directed by Joe Berlinger (who directed Metallica’s Some Kind of Monster) and tells the story of a humanoid robot that gets stranded at home while his family flies overseas for Christmas. Instead of calling the police, he stays home — alone — and bravely fights off Joe Pesci and some other guy whose name we can’t remember. [Editor's note: This is patently untrue. Actually, the film promises to investigate "humankind's keen interest in robots and how robots can challenge the impossible by saving lives while also holding the promise to become more integrated and helpful in daily life." So there.] Interested? We bet you are! Check out the PR, and the eight minute commercial short film, after the break.
