First shots of Samsung’s NX10 ‘hybrid’ DSLR surface
Written by Admin on December 21, 2009 – 2:30 pm -This one’s been the subject of rumors for months now, but it looks like Samsung’s NX10 “hybrid” DSLR (not to be confused with Samsung’s NX-10 desktop PC) has finally shown itself — assuming these shots are indeed the real thing, that is. That “hybrid” bit comes from the fact that this one fits in somewhere between a DSLR and a Micro Four Thirds camera, but there’s unfortunately little else known about it apart from what you can see on the camera itself. It will apparently come bundled with an 18-55 mm lens, however, and it’ll apparently be able to shoot up to 7 frames per second. Hit up the link below for a few more pics to get a better idea of its size. Read more »

Maine mulling cancer warning labels on cellphones, manufacturers mulling warning label on Maine
Written by Admin on December 20, 2009 – 11:30 pm -The debate on whether mobile phones are slowly turning us into a world of ailment-riddled weaklings rages on in the scientific community, but at least one state may be ready to step up the ominous, non-actionable warnings anyway. A representative in Maine has apparently persuaded her colleagues to let her bring up a proposal during January’s session of the state legislature that would require warnings on devices about the alleged link between RF emissions and brain cancer, strongly advising users to keep the devices away from their heads and bodies. At best, this seems premature, and at worst, it runs a risk of breeding a nation of 24 / 7 Bluetooth headset users — but the politician responsible for the movement seems to have it figured out: she holds her own phone away from her head while using it and turns it off unless she’s expecting a call. Could someone in her district please let us know what kind of archaic voice-only device she’s using? Read more »

Re transforms your iPhone into a universal remote (which seems like a step backwards, to be honest)
Written by Admin on December 20, 2009 – 4:30 am -
OK, so we know a thing or two about the “convenience” of using your iPhone as a remote control. For instance, using it to control Boxee was alright — until we needed to make a call. Or we received a call. Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but the idea of re-purposing your phone to act as a universal remote seems a little silly. But what do we know? Maybe you hold all calls while Jersey Shore is on anyways. In that case, Re could be your next favorite gadget. This bad boy lets your handset communicate with all your AV equipment via infrared, contains an extensive database of devices, and can learn from any IR remote. If that weren’t enough, New Kinetix promises regular updates to the app — and your typical remote can’t do that! Compatible with the iPod Touch as well, there’s no word yet on a price or release date, but we’re expecting that we’ll be getting plenty more details come CES time.

WebOS 1.3.5 coming to CES: better performance and more app storage, says Palm CEO
Written by Admin on December 18, 2009 – 11:30 pm -
Here’s something to glean from Palm’s recent quarterly call, besides the still less-than-profitable fiscal number, of course. CEO Jon Rubinstein divulged that yes, we will indeed be seeing webOS 1.3.5 during CES early next month. Even better, we got some insight into what we’ll be expecting from the update: more application storage (hooray!), better WiFi / app performance, improved battery life, and “increase Pixi speed and responsiveness” — interesting that Pixi is called out solo for that last one, but we’re not about to read too much into that just yet. Good news all around, but let’s hope there’s still a surprise or two left in store come January 7th.

Notion Ink Preparing Android Tablet
Written by Admin on December 18, 2009 – 11:30 pm -
Notion Ink seems isn’t want to be left with the Tablet PC market as the company is preparing an Android-powered tablet with a Pixel Qi display. Currently, the company only showing off renders of the tablet, but it has get much of attention. Specifications of MacBook Air-like (should) include; 10.1-inch display with 1080p resolution video playback, 48-hour standby battery life, A-GPS, Digital compass and Accelerometer, ambient light and water sensors, 3-megapixel camera with autofocus, SD card slot, and 16GB and 32GB SSD options. Connectivity include USB HDMI, 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Tri-band at 850/1900/2100 UMTS/HSDPA bands. No idea on pricing and availability, but we probably hear more about this device until early January 2010 at CES.

Google’s Nexus One lacks multitouch?
Written by Admin on December 18, 2009 – 4:30 am -Our buddy Tnkgrl just had a sit down with Google and HTC’s lovedroid, the Nexus One. She “wasn’t allowed” to take pictures or video but she came away with plenty of detail. The biggest point of clarification might not be what’s included in the handset, but what’s missing: multitouch. She confirms, “no multitouch support in the browser or in Google Maps,” just like Verizon’s Droid. The unit she tested included a 4GB microSD card, 1400mAh battery, works on T-Mobile’s 3G only (AT&T limited to EDGE), and was “super snappy! Faster than the Droid.” She also noted “gold contacts” along the bottom edge presumably for a docking port thus jibbing with whispers of a Nexus One Car Dock accessory. Now hit the read link for all the details if you still have the strength. Read more »

Rooted Nook gets Pandora, shot at true happiness
Written by Admin on December 16, 2009 – 11:30 pm -Outside of swearing up a storm on a Twitter app, there aren’t many better ways to announce your presence on a new Android device than the comforting song selections of well-curated Pandora station. A newly rooted Nook with an unlimited supply of free 3G? Even better. The folks behind the rooted Barnes & Noble Nook have now managed to install Pandora onto the device. It took some VNC trickery to get past the login screen, but after that the app works perfectly with the Nook’s touchscreen and even runs in the background while you read. Right now the NookDevs are working on a software unlock so that you don’t have to open the Nook to root it, and are also looking into a Nook app marketplace of sorts. We don’t know how long the fun will last, or what Barnes & Noble’s response will be — so far they’ve been mum on the issue — but the NookDevs claim that based on a perusal of the end user license agreement “there is nothing in there to get us into trouble,” so hopefully we’re looking at the beginnings of a beautiful, awkward friendship between a device maker and hackers. We can dream, right? Read more »
