A-DATA’s USB 3.0 / SATA II flash drive announced for January

Written by Admin on December 30, 2009 – 11:30 pm -

We’re a few precious breaths from 2010, and if there’s anything we’re looking forward to, it’s some wicked fast USB 3.0 storage — Intel be damned. Set to hit shelves sometime in January, A-DATA’s N002 Combo Flash Drive sports both SATA II and a USB 3.0 connection. Using the latter, the drive boasts up to 200MB/sec read and 170 MB/sec write speeds. Or if you’re feeling retro, you can take advantage of that backwards-compatibility and connect via USB 2.0. Now, we don’t know how much this bad boy will cost, but it will be bundled with A-DATA UFD to GO software. Of course, this thing is not nearly as cute as the Kissing Octopus USB drive, but we’re sure it’s not without its charms.

Windows Mobile and Xbox Live coming together, according to Microsoft job ad

Written by Admin on December 30, 2009 – 4:34 am -

The hints were already pretty strong on this one, but now Microsoft has come right out and said it, albeit in a job posting — the Xbox Live gaming platform is extending beyond the console and specifically onto WinMo phones. Seeking a Principal Program Manager who would be responsible for bringing “Xbox Live enabled games to Windows Mobile,” Redmond is particularly interested in “avatar integration, social interaction, and multi-screen experiences.” That leaves an awful lot of room for imagination as to how the two modes of gaming will complement each other, but at least we now (sort of) know that it’s going to happen.

Unichal unveils portable, pocketable DIXAU DX3 dictionary

Written by Admin on December 29, 2009 – 2:30 pm -

At first glance, this looks a tiny bit like a flip phone of yesteryear, sure. Closer inspection, however, will prove it to be… a tiny dictionary! Korean company Unichal’s recently shown off its newest pocket dictionary, the DIXAU DX3. This tiny source of knowledge boasts a built-in camera which can scan unknown words and deliver definitions on the front facing stylus-enabled touchscreen. The unit boasts a microSD card for multimedia storage, and is also equipped with the ability to speak back words to you — in case you really can’t be bothered to read them for yourself. It’s available now in Korea, and though we doubt it’ll ever make its way to the US of A, we’ll keep watch for you. There’s one more shot after the break. Read more »

NorhTech Gecko netbook loaded up with AAs and booted

Written by Admin on December 28, 2009 – 11:30 pm -

It’s been a while since we first saw the $199 NorhTech Gecko hit the scene, but the AA-powered netbook looks to finally be hitting US shores in proper fashion, and the crew at Lilliputing just got their tester. Inside it’s no great shakes, with a 1GHz Xcore86 processor, 512MB of RAM, an 8GB SD card, and an 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 display — but almost every component can be swapped out for a more powerful variant, including the processor. That’s certainly intriguing, especially for the education market NorhTech is targeting, but we’re mostly on the edge of our seats waiting to find out how long those AAs last under some real use. Check one video after the break and another at the read link. Read more »

Sprint says webOS 1.3.5 is hitting the Pre today

Written by Admin on December 28, 2009 – 4:30 am -

Well, lookie here: it’s not up on Palm’s support site yet, but Sprint is showing a release date of December 28 — that’s today, by the way — for webOS 1.3.5 on the Pre. This is a pretty nifty little upgrade, you might recall — nifty enough to get none other than CEO Jon Rubinstein to name-drop it during the company’s most recent earnings call — thanks to the removal of the platform’s troublesome app storage limit, better performance, better battery life (particularly in weak cell coverage), and a host of bugfixes sure to put a smile on your pretty face. Let us know how those updates go, alright?

HTC Espresso’s updated Sense UI shown off on video

Written by Admin on December 27, 2009 – 2:30 pm -

We’d been itching for some video of the mysterious HTC Espresso’s updated Sense UI ever since we saw those intriguing screenshots last week, and here we go: a leaked version of the ROM has been hacked onto a Hero and given a run-through. Overall, things seem to be slightly cleaner all around, and that new launcher bar at the bottom looks quite handy, but we’re still not totally sold on those translucent app icon surrounds. CES is right around the corner (and MWC is right after that) so we’re hoping to find out more soon — check the video after the break for now.
