Written by Admin on November 20, 2009 – 4:30 am -When Sony isn’t busy adding Facebook functionality or potentially courting Firefox for its PS3, it likes nothing better than to dream of global all-encompassing online services and stores. A step toward that goal is the company’s recent introduction of the PS3 Video Delivery Service into the heart of Europe. PlayStation loyalists in Deustchland, España, France, and the United Kingdom can now use their beloved console (or the PSP) to grab movies from a selection that is set to grow at a consistent pace of 50 new films being added per week. Both SD and HD versions are available, with the cheaper variants going for €1.99 / £2.49 to rent or €7.99 / £6.99 to purchase, and you can see a trailer for the new service after the break. Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 rolling out November 24th
Written by Admin on November 19, 2009 – 2:30 pm -
The name may not exactly suggest any groundbreaking changes, but we’re guessing that most Windows Home Server users with Windows 7 computers will want to upgrade to Power Pack 3 as soon as they can, which we now finally know will be on November 24th. As we’d heard previously, the big news with this update is that it brings Windows Home Server up to speed with its desktop OS counterpart, including support for full backup and restore of Windows 7 computers, Windows 7 Libraries integration, “better support” for netbooks and, of course, a slew of enhancements for Windows Media Center. Best of all, the update is completely free, and should show up via Windows Update as soon as it’s available.

Juicy Couture makes decent looking photo frame, Dean Koontz writes pretty good novel
Written by Admin on November 18, 2009 – 11:30 pm -We have to hand it to Juicy Couture — a company which we would have thought could never, ever crank out anything that made us think, “hey, that’s pretty nice!” Regardless, here it is in the flesh: Juicy Couture’s own take on the digital photo frame, and not a glitter or spangle in sight. In fact, we’re really digging the gaudy, old-timey gold resin frame, which measures 6.5 by 8-inches, and boasts a 2GB SD card (though the hideous logo remains… hideous). It’s up for pre-order for now, and should ship by the end of November — if you don’t mind paying $140 for it.

Samsung R0 not-so-boldly goes where most PMPs have gone before it
Written by Admin on November 18, 2009 – 4:30 am -Samsung’s certainly got the portable media player design down to a cold, cold science. There isn’t much in the way of artistic license here, so let’s get on with the specs, shall we? 2.6-inch TFT LCD, microSD slot, FM radio, second-language acquisition programs, text / photo viewer, and video codec support including DivX, XviD, and H.264. Your color choices, with the appropriately inappropriate adjectives, are Indie Black, Techno Silver, and Rap Pink. Korean-only, this little guy will line shelves at KRW139,000 (US $120) with 4GB internal memory, and KRW179,000 (US $155) for 8GB. Read more »

South Korean researchers devise a safer lithium ion battery
Written by Admin on November 17, 2009 – 2:30 pm -
While some researchers are focused on making batteries that are both safer and longer-lasting, it seems like the folks at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (or KAERI) are simply concerned with making ‘em really, really safe. To that end, they’ve now announced that they’ve managed to develop a new type of “separator” that is said to be far more resistant to heat and impact than traditional polyethylene separators. Made from a mix of polyethylene, nano-alumina and flourine-based resin that has been subjected to radiation, the new separator can supposedly hold up to temperatures of 150 degrees Celsius and “considerable outside impact,” and it can apparently be applied to all sorts of lithium-ion batteries — including everything from phones to laptops to electric cars. Of course, there’s no word as to when we might actually see the new and improved batteries, but KAERI has apparently already applied for the necessary patents for the new technique.
