Norway’s Statkraft kick-starts world’s first osmotic power plant

Written by Admin on November 25, 2009 – 2:30 pm -

It may only produce enough power to heat an electric kettle at the moment, but Norway’s Statkraft says that its new, first-of-its-kind osmotic power plant could be producing as much energy as a small wind farm by 2015, and continue to grow from there on out. To do that, the company guides fresh water and salt water into separate chambers that are divided by an artificial membrane, and when the process of osmosis takes place — salt molecules pulling freshwater through the membrane — the pressure is increased on the sea water side. That, of course, doesn’t get you power on its own, but the pressure is apparently enough to drive a power generating turbine, and if you have enough of those you have a power plant. A bit of effort, to be sure, but the process doesn’t emit any greenhouse gases, is completely renewable, and it doesn’t depend on the wind or the sun being out.

Blobo squeezable game controller bounces through the FCC

Written by Admin on November 24, 2009 – 11:30 pm -

Befuddled by the Blobo squeezable game controller developed by an upstart company out of Finland? The FCC probably was to, but that didn’t stop ‘em from putting it through their usual battery of tests, tearing it apart, and giving us a glimpse at the user manual and our first real up-close look at the device itself. Of course, it is just a rubber ball packed with Bluetooth and sensors — but if you’re curious, you can find more pics where this one came from at the link below. And if, by chance, you missed out on all the Blobo details earlier this week, you’ll no doubt want to check out the helpful and informative video after the break.

HTC HD2 can be coaxed into doing 802.11n, if you know how to sweet-talk it

Written by Admin on November 24, 2009 – 4:30 am -

Even though Broadcom, Atheros, and Qualcomm have all been sampling phone-ready draft 802.11n chipsets for some time now, you’re still not seeing the tech swiftly overtake 802.11g in the mobile arena — in fact, we dare you to find a single phone in your carrier’s store that can do it. Odds are you can’t, but HTC HD2 owners can win a few quid off their skeptical (non-Engadget-reading) friends by enabling support after the fact. Looks like draft-n support got buried in the company’s WinMo monster — a fitting device to add such a rare display of raw, savage wireless power, if we do say so ourselves — but it got turned off in the shipping firmware for some reason, possibly concerns over increased battery draw, flakiness, or a stark realization that the benefits of 802.11n might not be fully appreciated in a device hamstrung more by a crappy browser than by slow WiFi. If you want to live on the edge anyway and flip the switch, xda-developers has the registry hack you need — and if you’re using an HD2 in the States without 3G right now, let’s be honest: you kinda need all the speed-boosting wireless hacks you can dig up. Google Maps Navigation officially comes to Android 1.6

Written by Admin on November 23, 2009 – 2:30 pm -

You might’ve thought that Google was positioning its industry-changing Google Maps Navigation as a value proposition for Android 2.0 and beyond, but yeah, not so much — instead, they’ve gone ahead and backported it to 1.6 (alias “Donut”) which means that T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G and G1 plus other 1.6-equipped devices across the land can get in on the action. In the case of the memory-starved G1, that’s especially surprising, and a heartening sign that the world’s first retail Android device still has some fight left in it. It’s available from the Android Market now, so go ahead — try to get yourself lost. We dare you. Read more »

Chinese Dreamcast portable mod may inspire KIRFs, or already is one

Written by Admin on November 22, 2009 – 11:30 pm -

You thought the DreamTrooper would be the last portablized Sega Dreamcast mod you’d ever see? Nah. Turns out some folk in China quietly showed off an Oriental take on the mod — not too dissimilar from the form factor of the GameBoy Advance — just before the DreamTrooper’s debut. Details are thin here, but we’re hoping for a built-in optical drive and a decent battery life. If we’re lucky, some KIRF makers might pick up this idea and revive the legendary Dreamcast brand, so don’t go selling your dusty game collection on eBay just yet. Go ahead and watch some The King of Fighters action after the break. We know the Swirl still captivates your heart.

Sewell’s DisplayLink-enabled USB-to-DVI / VGA / HDMI adapter does 2,048 x 1,152

Written by Admin on November 22, 2009 – 4:30 am -

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen a totally useful display adapter from Sewell, but the outfit’s latest is certainly worth a gander if you’ve been yearning to push high-def signals through USB. The Minideck USB-to-DVI / VGA / HDMI (video only) adapter utilizes the DisplayLink DL-195 chip, which provides support for resolutions as high 2,048 x 1,152, so 1080p and 1,920 x 1,200 LCD monitors are well taken care of. Best of all, this thing doesn’t require a Core i7 rig to operate, so your 5 year old corporate laptop should be plenty to handle the rigors of powering a 24-inch LCD via a dusty old USB socket. It’s all yours right now for $99.95.

Sewell’s DisplayLink-enabled USB-to-DVI / VGA / HDMI adapter does 2,048 x 1,152 originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 22 Nov 2009 02:20:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Wired shows off an Apple tablet-formatted copy of Wired on a fake Apple tablet

Written by Admin on November 21, 2009 – 2:30 pm -

It’s a wild land of imagination over at Wired and Condé Nast these days. The pair have managed not only to dream up a colorful, animated copy of Wired magazine for the so-far imaginary Apple tablet, but actually whipped up a concept of a Apple tablet to go with it. The Willy Wonka-style pairing are being shown off at the Wired Store in New York, and go along with word the other day that Condé Nast was taking the development of “iTablet” versions of its publications very seriously. Perhaps a bit too seriously? We’re not ones to judge. Video of the tablet is after the break. Read more »
