Motorola Droid ads invading mailboxes, too?

Written by Admin on October 20, 2009 – 10:30 pm -

Because television and the internet can’t be the only media feeling the touch of the Droid’s marketing blitz, it looks like promotional mailers are being sent out. No new details or screenshots, but you can’t get enough of Motorola / Verizon’s Android device anyway, can you? A few more pics past the read link. Read more »

AMD ’s new Athlon II processors aim to go easy on the power, your wallet

Written by Admin on October 20, 2009 – 3:30 am -

AMD has just outed a selection of new Athlon II procs, which do little to help it reclaim the performance crown, but will be of interest to anyone who likes to keep things minimal — whether we’re talking about prices or temperatures. Starting at $69 per chip (when bought in bulk) with the 2.7GHz dual-core X2 235e and topping out at $143 for the 2.3GHz quad-core X4 605e, AMD’s new e-tagged processors operate within a 45W thermal envelope, as opposed to the relatively standard 65W TDP. The Sunnyvale outfit makes some ill-advised claims of “up to 75 percent” better performance versus comparable Intel CPUs — the small print tells us that number is derived from 3DMark Vantage while testing with different GPUs — but we suppose until the Thuban six-core shows up, AMD will have to take performance gains from wherever it can get ‘em, including its own imagination. RIM’s BlackBerry watch pictured, possibly called ‘inPulse?’

Written by Admin on October 19, 2009 – 1:30 pm -

You might recall that RIM was rumored to be following down Sony Ericsson’s path of branded Bluetooth watches to accompany its phones, and now, it looks like we might have the first real renderings of the final product before our eyes. This here wrist candy is possibly called the “inPulse” (not to be confused with Verizon’s similarly-named prepaid offering), featuring an OLED display, real-time message preview, and presumably some sort of glanceable caller ID to make needlessly pulling your Tour out of its holster a thing of the past. Interestingly, it seems like the watch isn’t being developed in-house — instead, work has been farmed out to some company dedicated to the BlackBerry aftermarket with an official announcement expected “soon.” As far as we know, Sony Ericsson’s watches — which arguably look nicer on account of their analog / digital hybrid design — haven’t been hot sellers, but who knows, maybe RIM’s got some neat tricks up its sleeve with this one.

Ectaco jetBook Lite does everything it can to claim ‘cheapest US e-reader’ title, no matter the sacrifice

Written by Admin on October 18, 2009 – 10:30 pm -

Ectaco knows what you want, and that’s an e-book reader that hits the $149 price mark, no matter what has to get cut in the process. The jetBook Lite, recently shown off at the Frankfurt Book Fair, is just such a handheld. Gone is any notion of electronic ink, opting instead for a 5-inch reflective TFT manufactured by Toshiba and usually implemented in pocket dictionaries. The other big sacrifice is an internal battery, instead going for a slot for four AA batteries that literally jut out of the back of the unit. Internal memory’s just 100MB, but there is a SD slot for expansion, and there’s language options for English, German, Spanish, Russian, and Polish. While the spokesperson singled out Barnes & Noble as where to buy the e-books from, we’re not sure if that’s an exclusivity agreement as much as it is just a suggestion. Lesen.net got some hands-on time with the device, who noted it’s got some heft to it for its size, but is still quite pocketable. Still, for around $150 you can probably get yourself an older Kindle or Sony Reader instead, but don’t let that stop you. See it for yourself in the video after the break. Read more »

Gemei’s 4.3-inch HD8800 PMP does 1080p out, other cool things for $122

Written by Admin on October 18, 2009 – 3:30 am -

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen a compelling new media player from the labs of Gemei, but the HD8800 ain’t half bad. Offering up a 4.3-inch display with an 800 x 480 resolution, this touchscreen-based PMP packs 8GB of internal memory, a battery good for five hours of movie playback (or ten hours with audio), USB 2.0 connectivity, 3.5 millimeter headphone jack and support for more formats than you’ll ever use. Oh, and then there’s that handy video out feature, which can supposedly shoot out content at up to 1080p via HDMI. It’s yours right now for a buck-twenty-two, but only heaven knows if that “JESSICA” wallpaper is changeable.

Verizon asks ‘if the iDoesn’t, what does?’

Written by Admin on October 17, 2009 – 1:30 pm -

The “there’s a map for that” ad was a pretty aggressive way to broadside AT&T and the iPhone, but it looks like Verizon’s just getting warmed up. We’re hearing that the carrier will be kicking off a major new campaign this evening during the Yankees-Angels game that’ll feature “a very different look and a whole new attitude,” calling out the “iDevice” (their words, not ours) for all the things it can’t do. That’s a bold offensive for a carrier that historically has lacked breadth and depth in its smartphone lineup, but with the big new Android releases coming down the pike, this might be perfect timing — and a strong implication that we can seriously put those endless Verizon iPhone rumors to bed for a little while. Zii Egg Android installer arrives next week, consumer devices nowhere in sight

Written by Admin on October 16, 2009 – 3:30 am -

Zii hopefuls will be pleased to hear that ZiiLABS is releasing the Android installer “next week.” The tweeted update means that developers with the Zii EGG will have the chance to get friendly with Google’s droid as Creative’s project attempts to walk our for retail on something other than its homegrown Plaszma OS. While this would have made stellar headlines in early 2009, at this point, with Microsoft and Apple both offering a stunning pair of dedicated, full-screen media devices, and a shedload of media-capable Android-based phones now hitting the market, well, it all seems to be too little and much too late for Creative. But if its only intention is to serve as the foundation for China’s KIRF market then why should we care anyway?
