iTunes 9 breaking AirTunes connections?
Written by Admin on September 14, 2009 – 1:30 pm -Apple breaking support for third-party devices in iTunes may not have been all that unexpected, but you’d think it’d have support for its own products lined up before pushing a major update out the door — especially something that it had already broken with the last major iTunes update. AirTunes users apparently aren’t that lucky, however, as reports are now cropping up that iTunes 9 is breaking connections with the home audio streaming service left and right — although at least a few people seem to be reporting only intermittent problems. No word from Apple itself just yet but, if the last go ’round is any indication, it should have a fix for the problem sooner or later. In the meantime, feel free to relay your tales of AirTunes woe in the comments.

VIZIO Connected TV & VIZIO Internet App platform demoed at CEDIA
Written by Admin on September 12, 2009 – 10:30 pm -
With VIZIO’s first LED local dimming backlit HDTV just days away from debut and its first Connected TV nearing production, we were able to lay eyes and hands on the television and its funky QWERTY Bluetooth / IR combo remote. Check the pics and videos (including looks at VIZIO’s smaller LED sets ready to hit shelves this fall) for a look at our walkthrough; in the demos at least, the VIZIO Internet Apps platform was speedy and easy to use, however our experience with widgets so far has given us more than enough reason to wait for a full retail rollout before making any final decisions. One tidbit for those not ready to invest a whole new TV? The next iteration of VIZIO’s Blu-ray player should pack not only integrated Wi-Fi, but also the full VIA / widget experience.

Upgrading to Windows 7? Set aside 21 hours, just in case
Written by Admin on September 12, 2009 – 3:30 am -We can say for sure that our own Windows 7 upgrade experience didn’t take, oh say, a whole day, but according to Microsoft, your own just might. The boys and girls in Redmond set out with a goal of seeing the Vista to Windows 7 upgrade accomplished around five percent faster than an upgrade to Vista, and while it seems that they succeeded, the staggeringly wide range in install times has us a wee bit concerned. A variety of testing situations were put in place, and nearly every profile was tested on low-, mid- and high-end hardware. A clean install of Windows 7 on mid-to-high-end hardware took just a half-hour, but a 32-bit upgrade on a mid-range machine with 650GB of data and 40 applications took an astounding 1,220 minutes, or just under 21 hours. The wild part here is that it’s not all that uncommon for a power user / all-around nerd to have a half-terabyte of information and two score programs, and in anticipation of one install actually taking over a day, the team didn’t even bother testing this path on a low-end rig. Good thing our imaginations are in check, huh?

iPhone OS 3.1 enforcing Exchange device encryption, only supported by iPhone 3GS
Written by Admin on September 11, 2009 – 1:30 pm -Noticing a “Policy Requirement” error when trying to use your Microsoft Exchange account after upgrading to OS 3.1? Then there’s a good chance you’re not using an iPhone 3GS, as Apple has just confirmed via a support page that the upgrade can now enforce the Exchange ActiveSync mailbox policy requiring encryption on the device, which just so happens to only be supported by the 3GS (guess that “S” stands for more than just speed). Not surprisingly, the only solution for non-3GS users is to contact their Exchange Server administrator and hope that they’re willing to change the policy to no longer require device encryption.
