Apple’s not exaggerating when it says these are entirely new problems, and whatever happens next will set a precedent for a long time to come.

Google refutes USA Today report on blocked Skype application
The story is surely fine fodder for a FUD enthusiast up to that point, but it appears (gasp) that USA Today may have gotten one minor fact wrong.

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic up for $290 preorder on US site

Written by Admin on August 21, 2009 – 3:30 am -

We’d figured the 5530 was destined for markets around the globe where 2G still dominates, so imagine our pleasant surprise to see that good ol’ Nokia USA is as amped as anyone to start selling the company’s new low-cost S60 5th Edition device. This leaves potential buyers in a doozy of a dilemma, though: most retailers are now selling the 5530’s big brother, the 5800, for under $300, which makes the $290 sticker for a 3G-less version pretty hard to swallow. On the flipside, the 5530’s unquestionably the more attractive phone and the updated home screen is going to leave 5800 owners insanely envious. It’s a tough call, and it’s not a call we’d want to have to make — one of each, perhaps? There’s no shipping date listed on the preorder, but for your patience Nokia’s awarding you with an MD-8 stereo Bluetooth speaker if you order online — just pony up your $289.99, pick the white or black version of the phone, twiddle your thumbs, and don’t be shocked when the New York and Chicago flagships get stock before you do.

Nokia N97 mini pops in the FCC, not so much mini-er than the N97

Written by Admin on August 20, 2009 – 1:30 pm -

It’s still hard to believe that Nokia’s already upstaging the N97 with the N97 mini just two months after the big guy shipped, but here we are, staring at the FCC documentation. There’s not much to go on here besides this label-location drawing, which is marked with a 1:1 scale — allowing us to set our regular N97 down next to it and show you just how little Nokia achieved with all that development money. Check it after the break, along with another pic of the mini the inimitable Eldar Murtazin just posted to his blog.

Snow Leopard box set makes short-lived cameo in Apple’s online store

Written by Admin on August 19, 2009 – 10:30 pm -

Whether or not Snow Leopard build 10A432 is really the ready-for-shipment “golden master,” Apple’s own site is giving hope to the masses that its next platform iteration is gearing up for a launch sooner rather than later. MacRumors is reporting that a Mac Box Set containing OS X 10.6 , iLife ‘09, and iWork ‘09 popped up on Apple’s online store today priced at $169 for single users and shipping within 24 hours. The page itself no longer exists, although not before Google’s spiders managed to pick up on it. It’s probably wishful thinking to think this is indicative of a release before its projected September launch window — and really, at this point, that’s only a couple of weeks away — if you were gonna hope for it anyway, here’s some fodder for ya.

Logitech’s Unifying-equipped Performance Mouse MX and Anywhere Mouse MX track on glass

Written by Admin on August 19, 2009 – 3:30 am -

Remember that USB Unifying receiver that Logitech outed earlier this month? Say hello to the newest duo to support the technology. Both the Performance Mouse MX and Anywhere Mouse MX can connect to a single USB Unifying nub, and both critters also boast the company’s own Darkfield Laser Tracking, which literally enables ‘em to mouse on glass that’s at least four millimeters thick (and pretty much every other surface, ever). It’s fairly easy to see that the former is designed for stay-at-home desktop users looking for comfort and precision, while the latter is small enough to sneak into most every laptop bag without causing a fuss. Also of note, the Performance Mouse MX sports force-sensitive side-to-side scrolling (software enabled), while the Anywhere Mouse MX gets dedicated back and forward buttons. Check the full release and specifications after the break, and catch these guys in US / European stores later this month for $99.99 and $79.99 in order of mention.

Sony unveils slimmer PS3: $300, lands in September

Written by Admin on August 18, 2009 – 1:30 pm -

Hardly a surprise, but Sony got on stage today at GamesCom and confirmed what we’ve all known deep down in our hearts: the new, slimmer PS3 is really real. It’ll be out in the first week of September, and will retail for $300 (or 300 Euro, or 29,980 Yen). It’s smaller and lighter, has a 120GB HDD, and packs “all the same features” of the regular PS3 while consuming 34 percent less power and taking up 32 percent less space. Existing PS3 SKUs have their prices dropped a hundie apiece tomorrow in anticipation, so be sure to grab a space heater while you’ve still got a shot — though we’re not sure why you’d pay $300 for an 80GB PS3 when you can wait a couple weeks and get 120GB in a cuter package. A couple pics of the unveil are after the break.
