MIU’s vaporware HDPC now looking like a Nokia E90, but less buyable
Written by Admin on August 25, 2009 – 3:30 am -The problem with your product not existing is that it’s hard to make money off of it, and after a while, would-be buyers start to hate you and everything you stand for. On the plus side, redesign costs hover near zero, so why not play around and shoot for the moon with wild specs that we’ll likely never have the opportunity to own? As far as we can tell, South Korea’s MIU is no closer to launching its do-everything HDPC than it was a year and a half ago — and if anything, they’ve actually managed to regress a bit since they actually had a real live prototype back then. Anyway, the latest round of virtu-changes gives us a larger primary display that’s up to 1024 x 600 (we’ll take all the resolution we can get since the $900 flavor is supposed to run XP), a grand total of three cameras, integrated GPS, HDMI out, and a T-DMB tuner. Strangely, the MID’s phone face has taken on a distinctly E90 accent, right down to the inexplicable S60 screen shot used in the mockup — but rest assured, you’ll be able to buy, sell, and buy an E90 again before you’ll be able to get your paws on the HDPC, which MIU says it’s shopping around to distributors. We’re keeping our easily-dashed hopes in check. Read more »

Nokia N900 puts on makeup, does hair for leaked press shot
Written by Admin on August 24, 2009 – 1:30 pm -Normally, we’d take a look at something like this and say, “yeah, could be real, could be fake.” Goodness knows there are enough mega-talented graphic designers in the world with the free time to craft this. Here’s the thing, though: this phone / MID hybrid — the latest in Nokia’s Internet Tablet series — has already been outed enough times so that we know this has to be a genuine press shot. If we had to guess, Espoo fashioned it in preparation for its Nokia World event in Germany early next month where the N900 will presumably be announced into officialdom; there’s no sign on when or how the T-Mobile USA version will be unveiled, but we’re getting pretty amped for it. PCI Express 3.0 specification formally delayed, products pushed to 2011
Written by Admin on August 23, 2009 – 3:30 am -We’ve been enjoying (or just dealing with, depending on perspective) PCI Express 2.0 since early 2007, and it now looks as if we may still be utilizing said protocol come early 2011. Way back in June of ‘08, we began to hear whispers that the next iteration of the technology would be finalized by the end of this year, but now the PCI SIG has formally delayed the release of the specification until the second quarter of 2010. What does that mean for the consumer? Try coping with the fact that you won’t see a PCIe 3.0 product until 2011. As the story goes, the delay was needed in order to “maintain backward compatibility with current PCI Express standards,” and while the technical details of all that may interest some, it’s the awfully unfortunate setback that’s most notable here. But hey, at least all those PCIe 1.0 cards that are still totally relevant will work with your next (next-next?) PC!

Video: Robot hand shows off amazing dexterity, speed
Written by Admin on August 22, 2009 – 1:30 pm -So you want something to look forward to in your fast approaching old age, eh? If robots playing baseball doesn’t quite cut it, how’s about a robohand that redefines what we understand by the word “dexterity”? The Ishikawa Komuro Laboratory is at it again, this time demonstrating robotic appendages with a reaction time of a single millisecond. Using harmonic drive gears and a (really) high-speed actuator, the three-fingered hands can tie your shoelaces, tweezer your brow, and even perform some kung fu pen spinning for the ladies. Video after the break — skip ahead if you must, but don’t miss out on the slow-mo action at 2:40 in the demo, it’s pure kinetic poetry.
