Navigon brings MobileNavigator to iPhone’s App Store, we go hands-on

Written by Admin on July 22, 2009 – 1:28 pm -

While the world waits with bated breath for TomTom to make good on its promise of providing a bona fide GPS application for iPhone OS 3.0, Navigon is stepping in with every intention of stealing the aforementioned firm’s thunder. Sure, AT&T has issued its own subscription app that dings you $9.95 per month, and we’ve also seen a few dedicated GPS apps surface from both Sygic and XRoad, but this is definitely the first on-board iPhone nav solution from what we’d call a “major” GPS company. Available starting today in the App Store, the 1.29GB MobileNavigator program contains comprehensive NAVTEQ maps of North America, and if you’re interested in Europe, Navigon’s app for that side of the pond was released around a month ago.

Apple confirms and expresses sadness over death of Chinese iPhone prototype handler

Written by Admin on July 21, 2009 – 10:30 pm -

Reports have circulated the internet that a 25-year old worker at Chinese manufacturer Foxconn, which produces all the iPhone models for Apple, committed suicide last week following revelation that a fourth-generation iPhone prototype, one of the 16 iPhones he was responsible for, had gone missing. While not confirming the case being a suicide or the cause being the disappearing device, a spokesperson for the Cupertino-based company did release a statement corroborating the news of his death, saying that it is “saddened by the tragic loss of this young employee, and we are awaiting results of the investigations into his death. We require our suppliers to treat all workers with dignity and respect.” The status of the missing iPhone prototype, which may or may not have been one that earlier this month found itself on eBay, remains unknown. Our hearts go out to all involved. Read more »

Nintendo’s Wii MotionPlus selling well, and Wii Sports Resort ain’t even out yet

Written by Admin on July 19, 2009 – 3:30 am -

For a device that took a solid year to go from “debuting at E3” to “shipping,” we’re pretty surprised to see that Nintendo’s Wii MotionPlus held as much steam as it did. With overall video game sales dropping in June for the first time since 2000 (when looking at year-over-year figures, anyway), the Big N still had a few hundred thousand reasons to smile. Aside from the 361,700 Wii consoles and 766,500 DS units that shipped in June, the company also managed to sell 169,000 Wii MotionPlus dongles — and that’s not including the ones that were packaged with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, of which 272,400 units were sold. The real kicker, however, is that the accessory’s real partner in crime (that’d be Wii Sports Resort) has yet to be released. It’s good to be king, ain’t it Mario? Read more »

Polymer Vision yields to bankruptcy, we bid Readius adieu

Written by Admin on July 18, 2009 – 1:30 pm -

Ugh. Another one bites the gently gnashed rock particles, as they say. Polymer Vision, which was already having some pretty significant cash flow issues back in April, has reportedly caved under pressure and sought shelter under Chapter 11. According to the Hampshire Chronicle, the company famous for developing a bendable e-paper display has fittingly folded, leaving its 50 employees searching for new lines of work and millions of fans grasping for answers. The report continues to say that the promising (but oft delayed) Readius display isn’t likely to ship in its current form, and now it seems that the future is quite murky for the company and its flagship product. Call us crazy, but if you’re looking for an easy way into the e-paper market, you might be able to pick up whatever’s left here for a song. Just sayin’.

How would you change ASUS’ Eee PC Seashell line?

Written by Admin on July 17, 2009 – 10:30 pm -

In the past month and change, ASUS has found time to issue not one, but two new Seashell netbooks. Originally shown to the adoring public at CeBIT in Germany, this fresh take on the Eee PC was a welcome change to the drab netbooks we were accustomed to falling asleep on. We managed to have a look at both the ultraslim 1008HA as well as the more business-oriented 1005HA, but now we’re eager to hear your opinions on the matter. What would you do differently with the Eee PC Seashell line? Would you beef up the battery? Add a few ports? Swap in a different display or processor? We know Microsoft’s Windows XP limitations are holding PC makers back, but who says your imagination has to abide by those same guidelines? Detail your dreams in comments below. Read more »

Olympus Mju Tough-6010 seeks a clumsy photographer to grow old with

Written by Admin on July 17, 2009 – 3:30 am -

The latest addition to the Olympus Mju (Stylus in the US) family of ruggedized cameras is the Tough-6010, which claims to be waterproof up to (or is it down to) 3 m (10 ft), freezeproof to -10°C (14°F), and capable of withstanding drops from 1.5 m (5 ft). It retains the TAP Control Mode from its elder sibling, which lets users access various functions by tapping the camera’s top and sides. If you’re going to be snorkeling on Greenland’s north coast, there is perhaps no other camera for you — but if you care about actual camera specs, this is a 12-megapixel shooter, equipped with 3.6x optical zoom, 2.7-inch LCD, dual image stabilization, ISO sensitivity up to 1600, and storage handled by your choice of xd-Picture Card or MicroSD. Should you be leaving for Greenland soon, fret not, as the UK will be getting the 6010 this month for £299, with Europe and the US probably not too far behind. Read more »
