DIY VR Game Gun packs built-in motion tracking, optional mullet

Written by Admin on June 21, 2009 – 3:30 am -

Homebuilt motion controllers may be a fairly common occurrence these days — especially with the Wiimote simplifying things considerably — but this so-called “PC VR Game Gun” takes a slightly different approach than most, and has the added benefit of a pitchman firmly committed to selling it as the greatest thing since ShamWow. As you can see above, the rig consists of a toy gun with an LCD screen attached to it, but the real secret is a Gyration Air Mouse mounted on top, which allows for some full, seemingly responsive motion-tracking in any PC game. To really finish things off, our fearless modder also ripped apart a gamepad and wired it up to the trigger in the gun, which turns out to be just the thing for playing F.E.A.R…. on the highest difficulty setting. Must-see video after the break.

ASUS Eee PC 1005HA up for pre-order on Amazon

Written by Admin on June 20, 2009 – 1:30 pm -

ASUS’ Eee PC 1005HA (the cooler, younger brother of the 1008HA) impressed us when we first caught a peep of it in the wild. Internally, the two netbooks are identical — but the 1005HA boasts a user-replaceable battery, and leaves out the recessed ports and port doors (which we found to be slightly annoying — though attractive — in our review of the 1008HA). Well, it’s up on Amazon for pre-order now, which means we might be seeing this one sooner rather than later. For now, it’s priced at $349.99, but we’ll see if that price holds when it’s actually available.

The plan for legit Blu-ray copies explained at Engadget HD

Written by Admin on June 19, 2009 – 10:30 pm -

For those with a disc rack full of Blu-ray packages and who’d like to shove all those optical discs to the attic for a streamlined media server solution — without resorting to other routes like downloading or cracking open AACS — Managed Copy is finally on the way, thanks to the just finalized AACS specification, to offer an authorized option for making a copy of your Blu-ray disc. We had a nice long talk with gatekeepers AACS-LA about what to expect when compatible Blu-ray hardware arrives in 2010 and Managed Copy-enabled discs begin shipping later this year; for more details like how many copies can be made, how the DRM works and how much this might cost head over to Engadget HD and see what it all means, and hopefully when we can put away our discs for the last time in favor of a Blu-ray Jukebox. Written by Admin on June 19, 2009 – 3:30 am -

Well that was fast. Orange Boutique in Paris, France did a midnight release of the iPhone 3G S, and the gang at Rapid Repair were there to pick one up and subsequently rip their new toy to shreds. There isn’t much here in terms of analysis of parts yet, it’s more so just a quick and dirty job to get it out to the world, but hey, if you’re into watching someone rip apart brand new, expensive gadgetry, we’ve got just the gallery for you.

Maria Sharapova models Bluetooth-enabled Sony Ericsson prototype dress

Written by Admin on June 18, 2009 – 1:30 pm -

Sony Ericsson’s official spokesperson, Maria Sharapova, was on hand recently to unveil a student-designed prototype of a Bluetooth-enabled dress. The iridescent scales that run up one side of the dress move and light up when the phone rings, enabling its owner to know about calls even in noisy places (so says the dress’s maker, Georgie Davies). Yes, it’s just a prototype for now, but it’s a pretty cute dress, so hopefully we’ll see these hit the streets at some point in the (nearish) future.

Popcorn Hour prices C-200 media streamer at $299, launches next month

Written by Admin on June 17, 2009 – 10:30 pm -

Looking for a more official announcement than a forum post? Beyond the read link awaits Popcorn Hour’s official press release for the C-200 containing some of the details we so desperately wanted, like a July release window and price of $299. Otherwise the details remain the same with support for nearly every codec we could ask for and a front mounted drive bay ready for HDD or optical drives of your choosing. We sent over a query about the Blu-ray and Blu-ray live support mentioned, but were unable to nail down any new details — we’d bet on being able to play back your de-AACS’d rips & backups but that’s about it. Any other questions that need answering once we score some hands on time with this do it all media box?
