Written by Admin on June 30, 2009 – 1:30 pm -We’ve been toying with a VholdR ContourHD helmet cam for a few weeks now, seeing how well it blends in with our adrenaline-fueled lifestyle. We’ve mounted it on various helmets, tried it with some moderately extreme endeavors, and, now that we’ve had a chance to refill our asthma inhalers, we thought we’d share a few of those adventures and give our impressions of this helmet-mounted HD shooter.

The Daily Roundup: here’s what you might’ve missed
Written by Admin on June 29, 2009 – 10:30 pm -| Steve Jobs back to work at Apple Of course, we’d been hearing of Steve’s continual involvement in “key aspects” of Apple’s business for a while now, so this seems like more of a rubber stamp on the status quo than a major change, |
Acer poised to beat Dell, become number two PC maker That’s a big deal — no non-US company has ever made it so high — and it’s interesting that the strategies Acer took to get there are the same things Dell’s been trying to do lately. |

Windows 7 pre-orders sell-out in Japan
Written by Admin on June 29, 2009 – 3:30 am -Often companies will claim a “sellout” in order to hype incredible demand for its product. However, these claims are pointless without any firm numbers — after all, there’s a big difference between moving 100 and 100,000 units. Now we’re getting word from Japan that the heavily discounted Windows 7 upgrades that went up for pre-order on Friday are sold-out. While no numbers are given, the 17 retailers involved in the pre-order sales who presumably have no vested interest in trying to inflate perceptions on behalf of Microsoft, report sales as “considerable” and taking only 1.5 days (of the 10 days planned) to burn though the alloted inventory. A quick check on Amazon US and Canada shows the same pre-order prices we saw Friday. Still, it might be wise to take notice of the “while supplies last” disclaimer if you haven’t already. Read more »

Windows Marketplace launching with 600 apps, or one bazillion times what the App Catalog has
Written by Admin on June 28, 2009 – 1:30 pm -
So Microsoft France’s product manager for Windows Mobile, Audrey Zolghadr, is saying that the company’s upcoming Windows Marketplace launch will be accompanied by around 600 apps certified and available on day one. Depending on your perspective, that’s either ridiculously anemic — the iPhone’s App Store has a couple orders of magnitude more currently available, for example — or a veritable cornucopia. Though the Ovi Store has no shortage of “items” to buy, an overwhelming majority of those are currently wallpapers, ringtones, and the like, and Palm’s App Catalog launched with so few apps that many folks (we’re not naming names) literally had every app installed within a few minutes of buying the phone. At the end of the day, it’s all about signal-to-noise ratio; if Microsoft can deliver 600 apps and half of those are terrific, they’re on the right track — though at this point, we’re thinking the next battle in Smartphone Platform Wars doesn’t really kick off until WinMo 7 swings by anyway.

Lenovo S12 gets a VIA Nano option
Written by Admin on June 27, 2009 – 10:30 pm -Wanna trade in some battery life and get a bit of extra speed in the deal? Lenovo is now offering its spanking new S12 netbook with a VIA Nano ULV 2250 processor and VIA Chrome9 HC3 graphics instead of the usual Intel Atom / GMA 950 combo, which should offer a little more pep (at least in some applications) and lops $50 off the original’s spendy $500 asking price. The Nano setup will draw more battery than the Atom, so you might want to invest that extra cash in another battery if you can track one down, but at least the $450 price includes a 6 cell as standard. How would you change Novatel’s MiFi 2200 portable EV-DO router?
Written by Admin on June 27, 2009 – 3:30 am -
Firms like Cradlepoint have been dishing out generic portable hotspots for years now, but it wasn’t until recently that US consumers had a carrier-branded option for creating their own WiFi zone via EV-DO. Novatel’s shockingly diminutive MiFi 2200 portable EV-DO router has officially arrived on both Sprint and Verizon Wireless, and while GSM followers have been unfortunately left out for the moment, we’re still eager to hear how early CDMA adopters are faring. Are you pleased with the convenience factor here? Have you had any odd and unexpected connection issues? Are you kosher with that 5GB limit on monthly throughput? Let us know if you think this thing’s worth its asking price, and if not, what would make it so. And… go! Read more »
