Amazon to charge per megabyte to send personal documents OTA to your Kindle
Written by Admin on April 30, 2009 – 3:30 am -So far, sending files to your Kindle cost a flat fee — one dime per document for conversion and download over Whispernet. Looks like that honeymoon is over, as Amazon’s announced that as of May 4th, the Personal Document Service will be a variable fee of $0.15 per megabyte, rounding up. It’s still free of charge if you transfer the documents over via USB, and sending them to “name”@free.kindle.com will return converted files to your email address gratis. If you’re trying to be frugal, we might suggest combining all those pending transfers into one fat PDF and sending it off sometime this weekend.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i vs. Nikon D5000… fight!
Written by Admin on April 29, 2009 – 1:30 pm -
We can’t quite recall if the last week in April of 2008 was jam packed with camera introductions, but you can go ahead and pencil this little stretch down as quite an important time in the lives of DSLR junkies. Nary 24 hours after we gave you our pair of pennies on Nikon’s D5000, Canon’s EOS Rebel T1i (its arch enemy, just so you know) has arrived. Based on specifications alone, the T1i looks like a much more serious shooter than the D5000, though its kit package — which also includes an 18-55mm IS EF-S lens — runs you $50 more and omits that all-too-intriguing articulating display.

Sony unveiling UMD-less PSP with slide-out buttons at E3?
Written by Admin on April 28, 2009 – 10:30 pm -Whispers of a new or revised PSP have been growing decidedly louder as of late, and now 1UP’s gotten a ton of new details from what it claims are “sources directly involved with the new system” — our favorite kind of people, actually. Here’s what they were told: UMD is out, replaced instead with options for either 8GB or 16GB of built-in flash memory. Also nixed is any hope of a “PSP-4000,” with Sony opting instead to use a subtitle. Three rumored names include PSP Slide, PSP Flip, and PSP Go!, the latter of which borrows from Sony’s pre-existing Go! brand and suggests there might be a built-in camera à la PSP-3000’s Go!Cam peripheral. The same D-pad, analog nub, and face button configuration remains, but they now slide out from the bottom of the unit (see mockup, pictured). Expected launch is September for Japan and late October / early November for US, and coming with ‘em are over 100 classic and new downloadable titles including Gran Turismo Mobile as a headliner. Sony’s supposedly going official with all this during its E3 press conference in early June, and for now they’re opting to give the staple “does not comment on rumors or speculation” response. That’s one mighty intriguing rumor — we can only hope it pans out. Read more »

AR-enhanced vinyl disk lets you scratch sans turntable
Written by Admin on April 28, 2009 – 3:30 am -If you find the idea of turntablism without the hardware intriguing, but last year’s surface-based TRAKTOR Scratch DJ system was just a little too abstract for your tastes, here’s a rather clever compromise from Cambridge-based designerTodd Vanderlin. Using a vinyl record equipped with an AR marker, he manipulates the music by moving in front of a video camera. It’s also got the added bonus of being able to control the beat across a three-dimensional space, and if you’re viewing it through the camera’s feed, the middle marker’s replaced by pre-set visuals. Direct your browser to after the break for a video demonstration. Read more »
