NIF scientists set the controls for nuclear fusion

Written by Admin on March 31, 2009 – 10:30 pm -

It looks like nuclear fusion is no longer just for precocious teenagers. Among the flurry of experiments going down worldwide, significant work will start rolling at the US National Ignition Facility sometime this June. Under construction for twelve years, the lab will focus 192 giant laser beams on two forms of hydrogen, deuterium and tritium. Combining these isotopes at high temperatures generates a colossal amount of energy, recreating conditions “at the heart of the sun.” The goal is to find a way to achieve controlled, sustained nuclear fusion and energy gain in a lab. According to the director of the facility, Dr. Ed Moses, “When all NIF lasers are fired at full energy, they will deliver 1.8 megajoules of ultraviolet energy to the target.” Lasting just a few nanoseconds, the system is capable of generation 500 trillion watts of power — more than the peak electrical generating power of the entire United States. Significant results are expected sometime between 2010 and 2012.

Touchscreen-based CUPC-P80 UMPC just might double as a carputer

Written by Admin on March 29, 2009 – 10:29 pm -

Comfile Technology’s CUPC-P80 isn’t quite a full-fledged UMPC, though it could definitely get away with posing as one. Realistically though, we suspect this one was engineered to control media and such within your vehicle. The 12v power system and the 10.2-inch display sure make it an ideal candidate for replacing that stock radio in your ‘87 Taurus, and while the 500MHz AMD Geode LX800 isn’t potent enough to stream YouTube videos in high-def, it should be plenty to spin your latest Tears For Fears-filled playlist. Other specs include 512MB of RAM, an Ethernet port, 4GB of flash storage, three USB sockets and an SD card slot. The rig can be purchased now for $699 without an OS, or for $849 with Windows XP embedded.

Twitter integration could come to OnStar

Written by Admin on March 28, 2009 – 2:30 pm -

We know you’ve been losing sleep just wondering how on earth General Motors plans to get OnStar users to keep on using once their free year is up, but apparently someone up top has been doing a bit more than just mulling. Gearlive received quite the interesting survey from OnStar this week, with a paragraph clearly explaining how Twitter integration would work should it come to the in-car alert / communication system. Essentially, the system could be programmed to read back tweets directed at you and convert your voice to text in order to upload new tweets. Envision this: you tweet that you’re headed to Forks, Washington, and you ask your thousands of followers to name a good place to buy garlic. Magical, no? Read more »
