Nokia 1600 survives week in fish’s belly, still makes smelly calls

Written by Admin on February 28, 2009 – 2:30 pm -

First off, it’s rather amazing that someone in a developed nation is still using the Nokia 1600 as their primary handset. Secondly, it’s even more astounding that said handset lasted a week in the belly of a cod and could still make calls after it was rescued. In a just-barely-believable story hosted up at The Sun, a businessman was both shocked and confused when his presumably sunk cellphone began ringing his lady friend around five days after he dropped it at sea. As the tale goes, a 25 pound cod managed to swallow the thing, and a pair of fishermen discovered it upon gutting their catch. The best part? The bloke who it was returned to is still using it, despite the fact that it literally reeks of rotten fish. Who knows — maybe he suffers from ichthyomania.

Video: Musiblocks rock the house

Written by Admin on February 27, 2009 – 4:30 am -

Here’s something that managed to slip beneath our radar but is definitely worth the double-back: Musiblocks. The design project consists of a central control block at the base of the tower with an embedded force sensor and 6 circular connectors. Add more (or heavier) blocks to increase the volume or twist the block atop the base to switch tracks. The only block with any electronics is the core, control block at the base — the other blocks are just hardwood slabs with tin conductors. Remember, if Sony can mass produce the Rolly, don’t be surprised to see Musicblocks go retail sometime soon. Video after the break.

CirculaFloor robot floor tiles keep you moving in virtual reality

Written by Admin on February 26, 2009 – 2:30 pm -

One of the big problems facing VR is the issue of mobility — how do you allow users unrestricted movement in virtual reality, while keeping them relatively static in real reality? Omni-directional treadmills have been tried in the past, and now researchers at the University of Tsukuba in Japan have developed something called CirculaFloor. The system uses four robotic tiles that constantly shift position, ensuring that there’s always a tile in the direction you’re headed. Additionally, the entire assembly moves slowly backwards, giving one the impression of movement while they’re actually standing relatively still. The tiles also incorporate lifts, for simulating staircases and the like. While this research is promising, there’s still plenty of work to be done — for instance, the tiles still move awful slowly, and while they seem sturdy enough for a leisurely stroll, a Left 4 Dead implementation is not likely to happen any time soon. Video after the break.

Dell now taking Mini 10 orders, sort of

Written by Admin on February 24, 2009 – 2:30 pm -

Dell may not be taking orders for the new Mini 10 on its website until February 26th, but it looks like those not willing to go the QVC route can now at least get an order in over the phone, with a few significant limitations. According to one MyDellMini forum user that opted for that route, Dell is only offering one configuration for $449, which doesn’t include GPS or that promised built-in TV tuner, and is available in black only. Otherwise, you’ll apparently get the standard 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive and, of course, that 10.1-inch 1024×576 display. Then again, February 26th is just a couple of days away, and with a stated ship date of March 31st, there’s no indication that these phone orders will actually be landing in your hands any sooner.

UMID M1 gets official, handled on video

Written by Admin on February 23, 2009 – 4:30 am -

We never in our wildest dreams imagined UMID would be the one to blur the line between netbooks and MIDs, but sure enough, it has. The all too elusive mbook (or M1, as it were) has reserved itself a spot on the web, and moreover, we’ve finally found ourselves a video of this fellow in action. We’re still believing a 4.8-inch screen is just too small for the Atom inside to be fully appreciated, but maybe our goliath fingers and awful eyesight aren’t indicative of the majority.

HTC says Touch Pro2 will be "broadly available," North America included

Written by Admin on February 22, 2009 – 2:30 pm -

In October of last year, HTC informed us that the Touch HD would sadly not be coming to the States via its Twitter feed. Shortly after Mobile World Congress, that same feed has delivered much, much better news in regard to the Touch Pro2. Directly from HTC: “And to answer the big question on everyone’s minds, the Touch Pro2 will be broadly available in all major markets, including North America.” A followup tweet affirmed that a launch date and country wasn’t yet set in stone, but that the phone would begin shipping out in “late Q2.” Oh, where art thou, May through July time frame?
